Reference Management Services

Updated: Dec 20, 2021

Whether they be Junior High or Graduate Students, all should be aware of plagiarism., the act of using the work of someone else and representing it as your own. This is essentially stealing, whether the work be a photo, quote, writing, research data, it's plagiarism.

Citing the work of others that you will use within the body of your research is the best way to avoid plagiarism. There are numerous databases online such as Google Scholar, ERIC, PubMed, and AGRIS are just a few of hundreds online.

By using a Reference Management Service (RMS) it's possible to search within the program, build a list of research items, and depending on the Modern Language Association (MLA) style required by the organization the project will be submitted to the items will be formatted to that style. Using a plug in with your word processing program you research data can be cited directly into the body of the work, all the while building a bibliography.

The three I have worked with extensively are RefWorks, EndNote, and Zotero. All are free if you are associated with a college or university and doing research. Here are some brief tutorials of all three.
